The Ant and the Grasshopper
Once upon a time, in a grassy meadow by the river, there dwelled an ant and a grasshoper. During the hot summer season, the ant was diligently gathering wheat grains from the farmer’s field. After collecting them, she carefully stored them in her larder. Meanwhile, in the grassy meadow, there was a grasshopper. He spent all his time singing and dancing. He, thoroughly enjoying himself, shouted to the ant, “Hey! Why work so hard? It’s such a beautiful day! Come enjoy the sunshine with me!” The ant responded, “We must gather food for winter. Soon it will be cold, and we’ll need it to survive.” The grasshopper found the idea absurd. “There’s plenty of food!” he exclaimed.
The Grasshopper’s Winter Trials
The grasshopper ignored her words and continued to sing and dance happily. Soon, summer turned into autumn, and autumn transitioned into winter. It got very cold because of the snow,and the sun was hardly seen. The cold made the grasshopper lose his desire to sing and have fun. Cold and hungry, he had nowhere to seek shelter from the snow outdoors. Suddenly, he recalled the ant and sought her out for food and shelter. Off he went to her abode and knocked on her door, seeking assistance. When she opened the door, the grasshopper asked to sing for her in exchange for food and shelter.
Consequences of Foolishness
“No,” the ant replied. “You mocked me for collecting food in the summer.” And she also said to him,”Sing somewhere else and earn your food and shelter.” That’s when the grasshopper realized he should have saved food for the winter instead of lazily singing and dancing during the summer.
